Asylum T (UK)

This deserted asylum is abandoned in a small town in Wales with the same name. I’ve seen pictures of this place when it was abandoned, but still inn good shape. Now the decay is everywhere and little stuff is left. Thieves has taken lots of stuff, even the roof tiles. Signs outside the buildings tells us: .Keep out! Danger! Everything of value has been stolen’. Our mission is purely photographing and exploring.

The hospital was officially opened in February 1903 and could house 352 patients. In the end of 1925 455 patients were present. It is build in an echelon (compact arrow) style which is common in England and Wales. This made the buildings easy accessible and it was also easy to build on new parts. In 1955 two additional wards were constructed. During WW1 soldiers were treated here – many suffering from shell shock. Under WW2 psychiatric patients and prisoners of war was kept here. In the mid 1990s parts of the place was left unused and in 2000 the place was completely abandoned.

There was also an abandoned church across the road, but we didn’t find a way in. If we had, it would probably be too dark to photograph something in there anyway.

Asylum BG (UK)

Another stop on the grand UK tour earlier this year. We had a quite interesting walk to get to this place. Over large fields and through a huge forest. A few dogs where barking in the distance the whole time – they was definitely aware of us. The first thing we saw on the hospital grounds was huge piles of ruble and bricks here and there. The place was literary being demolished as we walked through the area. Now and then we had to hide from workers in orange suits. Some of the buildings still stood, and we got a few shots of whats left. The most interesting wards and buildings were gone.

This mental hospital in Bristol opened 3rd May 1939 build in colony plan layout which means that there are a lot of buildings spread around in the huge forest. Abandoned in 2006. More info about the place here with several other links.

Asylum W (UK)

This psychiatric hospital in UK was built in 1869 but officially opened on 1st April 1873 capable of housing over 2000 patients. The large site included an Anglican church, a Catholic chapel, a brewery, a recreation hall (also used as a ballroom) and several farms. At one point the hospital had its own railway which provided free transport for staff and passengers but it closed down in 1957. During the World War 1 parts of the hospital was used as a military hospital. After the war the hospital grew to be the largest mental hospital in the country 3533 patients and 548 staff members.

In the late 1960s this mental asylum was referred to as “Horror Hospital” in the papers due to mistreatment of patients. Allegations of cruelty to patients led to a public inquiry. It was revealed that patients were locked into small rooms and outside in airing courts in all weather. Nurses dragged patients by their hair, beat them and set fire to their clothes and slippers.

During the 1970s and 1980s, new drugs and therapies were introduced. Long-stay patients were returned to the community or dispersed to smaller hospitals.

This location is by far the most decayed place I have been too and I really felt unsafe at some points. When large sharp pieces of broken glass was dangling from the ceiling in thin metal strings I felt an urgent need for a hard hat. Maybe that’s why the had secured the place so good with lots of high fences and guards? :)

Even if I kind of reveal the name of the location with this link, there are lots of historic pictures here worth a look. The main hall and some corridor shots are from back in the days are quite interesting too see and compariosn with my decay shots from present time.

And another blog update… I have decided to turn on the comment option on posts again. But I might consider removing comments about names and locations of places. :)

The main hall, still with Christmas decorations. A large snowflake is hanging from the ceiling.

A very decayed corridor.

Lots of long corridors stretching in all directions.

We had to be really careful here. Never seen a place in such decay before.

I found an object that weren’t crushed. :)

Through all the decay and vegetation you can see an old hospital.

Vegetation coming through…

Nice door.

The blue doors.

Sign on a door.

The dangerous stairs to the second floor with library and lounge.

Different angle of the stairs toward the Lawn shop.

Chair standing in decay.

The pink corridor.

One of two exterior shots of one of the many buildings.

On our way out.

Mental asylum TZ (DE)

Another great abandoned area in Germany. It was a quite foggy morning that made the buildings look even more haunted. Some of the buildings was inaccessible and some accessible through a maze of underground tunnels between the buildings. A really great explore with lots to see an photograph. The building with the large tower is really immense and looks real unsafe with large cracks on the walls. We walked up some floors, but collapsed elements of the building made it quite dangerous and difficult to find a safe passage so we went down again.

This facility was built between 1905 and 1908 and served as a state mental institution. It was closed in 1923 due to a economic crisis, but reopened in 1925 with capacity for 1400 beds. In the thirties the capacity increased to 1800 beds. During the war the hospital was damaged and many of the buildings was used as an army hospital for Soviet Forces after 1945. There are around 28 buildings on the site. It was completely abandoned in 1992, but some of the buildings are turned into homes for people.

The sun set quickly and when one of the crew members had lost his backpack somewhere, we had to go through some buildings in the darkness to look. Quite cool since I’m not used to be at places like this in the pitch black. Luckily we found what we were looking for.

The tower building

The massive tower building doesn’t look to safe.

Looks like a haunted house.

Nice foggy morning.

Fisheye shot of a overgrown porch .

Some showers.

The large theater (or cinema) with large parts of the roof collapsed.

Stairway in one of the buildings.

Lots of letters and stuff with Russian text laying around.

More nice stuff and a phone.

The laundry building is really cool. Lots of rusty machines.

More washing machines.

Lovely evning light in this room, also in the laundry building.

Details form the ironing boards.

A cash register.

Great room with a really nice painting on one of the walls. Another view here.

A surgery room shot with fisheye.

Some nice bottles.

More left over medical stuff.

Some parts of the buildings were burnt. Like this one with a bed.

The whole floor had collapsed in this room. Not a very safe place to be.

Love this room. The green wallpapers match the vegetation growing through the floor.

An apartment room.

Close up of the crazy tower.
